Jesus at Capernaum
(Luke 4:31-44)
Capernaum, literally the "town of Nahum," was a city located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had its own synagogue which was built by the centurion of the detachment of Roman soldiers who were quartered there. It was also a customs' station.
Jesus often taught in Capernaum and was it His residence for a time. He chose Matthew as one of His disciples there and it was also home to Peter and Andrew.
Jesus worked several miracles here, including the miracle on the centurion's servant (Matthew 8:5; Luke 7:1), on Simon's wife's mother (Matthew 8:14; Mark 1:30; Luke 4:38), and the man afflicted with an unclean demon (Mark 1:32; Luke 4:33).
Today, Tell Hum is generally the accepted site for ancient Capernaum.
